Here at LabLynx, we have been providing our webLIMS.com product as a SaaS/Cloud based LIMS for the past 2 years. This has been a highly successful product offering for not only new customers but long time existing customers have started switching to our Cloud services over hosting the LIMS in their own internal IT infrastructure.

As part of our continued R&D efforts in Cloud Computing, I have decided to use my LIMS Journal Blog to chronicle a new experiment in Cloud Computing. It will be called “DIY (do-it-yourself) Cloud-in-a-Box”. The research in this area has already been going on for the past 6 months and there has been tons of failures and false starts with this experiment and so I want to spare everyone that pain by documenting our successes and failures from this point forward.

If you have ever had to purchase a LIMS, you know what a chore it can be. First there are over 100 LIMS vendors and products to choose from; you have to sort through all those vendors and products and try to find a small, manageable group that can meet your functional and business needs and if that is not hard enough, the fun really begins when you ask… “How much is that LIMS in the window?”

This seems like a simple enough question doesn’t it? Well, I hear from all to many customers that getting a price list is like pulling hen’s teeth. Have you ever seen a hen with teeth? Getting a LIMS vendor price list is about as rare. Have you ever heard the saying: “If you have to ask how much it costs, then you cannot afford it”. All of these cliché's apply nicely to today’s LIMS industry.

One of the main purposes of having a laboratory is to generate data and subsequently, information for customers of the laboratory. Data is usually the raw analytical elements and quality control associated with the analysis. With this, the lab compiles this data into meaningful information that the customers of the laboratory use to make intelligent decisions.

Given this fundamental purpose of the laboratory, it is reasonable to place a great deal of importance on reporting, data extraction, data analysis and data mining to correlate information and patterns and to provide analytical results in a form that allows the customers to make informed decision and to take actions on that information.

Today I was shown a real world example of what I was writing about, by reference to a law suit by one LIMS vendor against another. The law suit is a bit of a soap opera and really is quite sad to see the lengths that vendors will go to in attempts to disparage each other to clients. Disposing of confidential data is not an easy task

At some point in time in your career, you will be obliged to destroy confidential data that is in your possession. I am not talking about pulling an Enron either.

If you work for a government lab or even a private sector lab, you know how much data your lab produces by the minute. The sheer amount of data can be overwhelming. Your organization may be performing work for another organization where you have a confidentiality agreement in place and when you complete your work for that other organization, you will be responsible for completely destroying that data after you have released it to your client.

Recently I have noticed a rash of client workstation lock downs at corporate and government sites. This is where the IT department locks the computer work station down of the users and prevents them from using the PC as little more than a terminal.
